《烈火邊境》內容根據真實人物故事改編，主角Newton Knight（馬修麥康納）是美國內戰時期的南軍逃兵，他與其他逃兵及逃跑黑奴在密西西比州的瓊斯郡組成團體，建立自治社會，對抗南方政府。





這故事最突顯的，是不管南北兩方如何包裝戰爭的理念與宗旨，最終受害的都是一群不分黑白的窮人。富人有各種手段可以避免從軍，窮人卻毫無選擇。這些沒什麼錢的人，必須忍受各種剝削，不僅其成年男性都要去當兵，家裡還不斷被課稅以資助戰爭。



最悲哀的是，即使打完一場慘烈的內戰，表面上似乎正直與善良都回來了，卻不是那回事。南方以「學徒」名義重新用起黑奴，黑人繼續被攻擊、吊死，3K黨猖獗，政府坐視不管。甚至，八十幾年後，Newton Knight的後代Davis Knight，還在因為疑似混有黑人血統，又與白人通婚，觸犯法律而接受審判。



這樣的歷史令人理解，為何有不少美國人如此堅持擁槍權。Newton的前妻（Keri Russell飾演）回頭找他時，說道自己的田被兩方的人馬都燒過。電影後段Newton帶著同伴們（包括黑人）去投票時，雙方的氣氛非常緊張，如果與當地政府人員屬於不同陣營，又沒有自備槍枝彈藥，看來真的是不用想投票了。美國人民經歷過這樣的時光，難免認為需持有保護自己的武器。



可惜的是，《烈火邊境》有這麼好的題材，劇本卻偏單方面說教。它給出很多角色、故事與細節，但沒有時間讓觀眾深入思考與體會──例如一開始用了一小點時間勾勒Newton不想再為富人們賠上小命，然後他很快成為如俠盜王子羅賓漢的角色，這些「重點敘述式」的跳接，以及非黑即白的論述，常常讓電影陷入教科書般的無趣。Newton在片中不僅是好人，簡直進入了至善的境界。他與周圍人士的關係，大致上一切和諧，偶有爭執也是迅速擺平，尤其Newton與第二任黑人妻子，彼此關係是如此完美，周圍的人對這件事的接受度也如此高，簡直夢幻到難以置信。





《烈火邊境》若做為一部歷史介紹片，還是有欣賞的價值，但以一部電影來看，本片有些失敗，可惜了好題材以及馬修麥康納 的精湛演技。
