本文會放很多Tori Amos現場演唱時的照片。她讓我著迷的地方很多，其中一項，就是她現場演唱時那種瘋狂與投入，甚至，許多人都說，"it seems that she's making love to the piano."。
前一陣子買了Tori Amos的精選輯"A Piano"，共五張CD，還有外表長得像個小鋼琴的精美包裝。其實它不只是精選，有不少歌曲remaster過，有些則是當年只收錄在單曲裡的版本，還有些從未發表過的曲子。因為這套新精選，我終於在多年後，又仔細重聽了她早期專輯例如"Little Earthquakes"，與"Under the Pink"裡的歌曲。這些歌大約都兩三年以上沒聽了吧。不過這回，最引起我注意的，是出現在"Under the Pink"專輯裡的歌，"The Waitress"。
在這套精選裡，"The Waitress"出現兩次，一為錄音室remaster版本(2006 Remastered Alternate Mix)，一為現場版本，其實兩種版本並不是我第一次聽，但也許以前沒有在同一天聽這兩版本，所以沒有如此特別的感覺。原本想寫篇文章聊這首我曾經非常非常愛的歌，但又提不起勁，不過前幾天看到我好友的暱稱放了這首歌的歌名，突然覺得老天怎麼好像在提醒我別懶惰，於是我乖乖提筆寫了本篇文章。
先說說為何這首歌如此吸引我吧。第一次聽這首歌，是大一時代。歌詞內容是一個女服務生﹝演唱者第一人稱﹞對另一同事的痛恨，恨到想殺她，所以，歌詞開宗明義就說，「我想殺掉那個女服務生，她在這兒比我多一年。如果我下手下得快，那算是我大發慈悲免她受苦。」即使歌詞非常明確而瘋狂，但這段音樂是冷靜低調的。然而，那段冷靜只是假象，下一段你就聽到Tori忍不住嘶吼：But i believe in peace. I believe in peace, BITCH! I believe in peace...
隨後的歌詞裡，繼續提到歌者想壓抑這種瘋狂情緒等等，到了最後則是我心目中的關鍵句："Boys all think she's living kindness. Ask a fellow waitress. Ask a fellow waitress."
我覺得Tori真有能力坦率說出「令人不舒服的事實」，跟哈利波特裡的Luna一樣。當時我對於這段歌詞再同意也不過，心中馬上回應一句："Sometimes, it takes a woman to identify a bitch." 現實生活中，女人之間的戰爭，並不會像電影「辣妹過招」(Mean Girls)一樣有個大和解。這還不打緊，最棘手的是，身處其中的男人通常搞不清哪個女的耍的是哪種心眼，有時候一個爛女人，在一個搞不清狀況的好男人眼中，也許因為她懂得如何操縱與拿捏各種形式的語言及伎倆，而成為天真善良的可人兒。其他女人要是說這爛女人的壞話，在男人眼中就變成善妒或酸葡萄。
在"The Waitress"錄音室版本裡，Tori就那樣冷靜與歇斯底里交錯，唱出心中的痛苦與矛盾。原本這對我已經是完美版本了，但幾年後聽了現場演唱的改編版本，才讓我震攝於這首曲子還有多大的爆發力。在新的編曲與演唱方式中，演唱者的心理狀態到最後幾乎已陷入瘋狂，Tori更在後段加了一些更有味道的新歌詞，例如最後段，她歇斯底里吼著："I believe in her goodness. I believe in her darkness. But i believe that she's a devil bitch!" 相信在本曲的現場版本裡，各位女性同胞們以往吃過什麼bitch的悶虧，都可以發洩到極點。
