My summary of Mr. Darcy's second proposal to Lizzy in Joe Wright's 2005 version of "Pride & Prejudice":

"Amid the morning mist, Mr. Darcy walked towards Lizzy and solved all her problems."

You might think that, if you were to sabotage every sense of romance delivered in Joe Wright's P&P, the sentence above would by the best weapon.

Yet, to think again, is that so dreadful? Mr. Darcy did solve all Lizzy's problems by his proposing her. And it still can be romantic.

I have a tendency to worry one or two steps ahead. I was worried about college when I was in junior high; about work and choice of career (middle class or proletarian) in university; about life, marriage, children, retirement, and death, which might come before all other things could even take place, in my late 20s. Given this track record, I might be worried about the next life after my 30th birthday.

Anyway.

Elizabeth Bennet, at her 20, was worried too. She was perfectly aware of her situation in life and the social expectation laid upon her. She was poor and also eligible for marriage. Her mission in life was to find a rich man and get married as early as possible. However she still insisted upon marrying for love. You can imagine how hard it is to be done in a short time and restricted social circle - to love someone eligible who loves you back and is also rich. Just when everything seemed to fail Lizzy, the 28-year-old aristocrat, Mr. Darcy, emerged from the morning mist and solved all Lizzy's problems. So now Lizzy completed all her obligation to her family. She wouldn't need to stay at her home and listen to Mrs. Bennet's gabblings. She could start her new life freely 'cause no one would ever bother her again except for Mr. Darcy. Mr. Darcy's bothering is definitely not an issue since Lizzy loves him and it's almost impossible for Darcy to gabble like Mrs. Bennet. At least, Darcy would do it with more elegance and delicacy.

Everyone wants to be rescued in certain phases of life.

In Joe Wright's P&P, when Lizzy sit by the big tree alone and looking sad, I can feel the full weight of her grief and sorrow.

Then she was rescued.

By proposing to Lizzy regardlessly, Mr. Darcy put aside his rank and pride to accept everything about Lizzy, including her connections, fortune, and social status. To top it all, Mr. Darcy would have a relationship of the nearest kind with Mr. Wickham, whom Mr. Darcy truely despised.

Still he made the proposal.

Many male friends have asked me: "why women are so obssessed with this novel?" I think the answer is clear. It's always good to see someone rescue you regardlessly and clear all your troubles in life. Don't you think? (BTW, Keira Knightley, in one magazine interview, said that she's obssessed with P&P since seven. )
